Selective Absorption of red garnet and ruby

Most gem color is caused by selective absorption, which is influenced by chemical composition and crystal structure.

Although red garnet and ruby look alike, they absorb light differently, so you can use the spectroscope to tell them apart. For each gem, the spectroscope shows a distinctly different set of lines and bands.
